Покращення пасажирських перевезень можливе за рахунок раціоналізації маршрутів прямування поїздів з ліквідацією перепростоїв в основному та оборотному депо, кільцювання схем поїздів, закриття малодіяльних вагонних дільниць та депо. Задачу раціоналізації маршрутів запропоновано вирішувати за допомогою математичного апарату теорії графів.
