N: The article presents a multi-criteria mathematical model for improving the technology of grouped freight train operations under resource-saving conditions. The proposed approach is aimed at increasing the efficiency of railway freight transportation by integrating energy, time, shunting, and infrastructure-related criteria into a unified optimization framework. Unlike traditional train formation models that primarily focus on minimizing wagon-hours or the number of reclassification operations, the developed model incorporates an explicit energy consumption component and capacity constraints of railway infrastructure, thus ensuring a comprehensive assessment of operational efficiency. The railway network is represented as a directed graph consisting of stations and line sections, while grouped freight trains are formed based on wagon flow distribution between origin–destination pairs. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model with a composite objective function that minimizes total energy consumption, delivery time, shunting costs, and infrastructure usage expenses. The model includes constraints related to train mass and length limits, section capacity, station processing capability, wagon flow balance, and delivery time standards. The energy consumption component is calculated based on train mass, section length, traction resistance, and locomotive efficiency parameters, allowing the evaluation of operational decisions from an energy-efficiency perspective. To ensure computational feasibility, the nonlinear energy term can be linearized, and the overall optimization task may be decomposed hierarchically into train formation planning and timetable coordination subproblems. The proposed solution approach combines branch-and-bound techniques with simulation-based validation to verify the robustness and practical applicability of the obtained results. A numerical experiment conducted for the conditions of a large classification yard demonstrates that the implementation of the proposed model allows reducing traction energy consumption by 7–12 %, decreasing wagon idle time by up to 15 %, and improving the utilization rate of line capacity. The obtained Pareto-optimal solutions illustrate the trade-off between transportation speed and energy efficiency, providing decision-makers with flexible operational strategies. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the integration of energy efficiency indicators directly into the train formation planning process and the simultaneous consideration of technological and infrastructure constraints within a single optimization model. The practical significance of the research is associated with the possibility of applying the developed model in adaptive train formation planning systems, digital traffic management platforms, and decision-support tools for railway operators. The proposed approach contributes to sustainable railway transport development by reducing operational costs and enhancing resource efficiency without compromising service quality.-
